Am 14. Juni 2005 hielt Steve Jobs eine vielbeachtete Rede vor den Absolventen der Stanford University. Den Zuhörern erzählte er drei Geschichten, die für sein Leben wichtig waren. “The first story is about connecting the dots”, so Jobs. Mit den “dots” meinte er die kleinen Bausteine, die Mosaiksteine, aus denen sich ein Leben zusammensetzt. Hierzu führte er aus: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever—because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference.”

David Brier, international anerkannter Fachmann für Brand Identity Management, hat diesen Gedanken, Mosaiksteine zu verbinden, Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, aufgegriffen, als er sich mit der Frage beschäftigte, was eigentlich Innovation ist. Dazu schreibt er in einem Beitrag für Fast Company: “I concluded that this was the single difference between the innovator and the ordinary person: one saw the dots and connected them while others 1) didn’t see them or 2) if they did, they didn’t explore, question, or connect any of them.” Angeregt durch diesen Gedanken hat Brier einen Essay über Innovation geschrieben. An dessen Ende kam Brier zu folgender Conclusio: “So what is innovation? Those other dots. The ones others miss. And having the certainty to know that the dots you see are not only valid but necessary if the world is to move forward.”

Ein hilfreicher kleiner Film, der uns davor bewahrt, zu glauben, die Bausteine, die wir täglich sehen, seien die einzigen, die es gibt. Es gibt noch weitere Bausteine: die, die wir übersehen haben; die, die wir ignoriert haben; und die, die wir längst vergessen haben.
Es sind diese anderen Bausteine, die das Potential haben, alles zu verändern.
